The postponement of the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo until next year is expected to generate costs equivalent to around 1.6 billion euros. This is reported by the Japanese news agency Kyodo and the Japanese daily newspaper “Yomiuri Shimbun” in agreement. The organizers had last declared that they intended to present a new overall budget by the end of the year.
The additional costs of 200 billion yen have become necessary because, among other things, halls and stadiums as well as transport facilities have to be rebooked. According to “Yomiuri Shimbun”, however, the newly budgeted sum will not include the financial means for the planned anti-corona measures. According to the report, the organizers expect the Japanese government to cover these costs.
As recently as October, Tokyo had presented a package of measures in 2020 that was intended to reduce the budget by 30 million yen (240 million euros). Among other things, expenditure on staff, festivities and the decoration of sports facilities was to be cut.
