The imprisoned ex-Wirecard boss Markus Braun is prepared to testify before the Bundestag’s investigative committee. “Dr Braun will testify before the investigative committee,” his lawyer Stephanie Vendt told the news agency Reuters upon request. “In view of the existing health risks with regard to Covid 19, we have requested a video hearing,” she added. At first the “Handelsblatt” had reported on the planned statement.
Braun has been summoned as a witness for Thursday to testify at the committee of inquiry in Berlin that is to shed light on the payment service provider’s financial scandal. Braun is accused of gang fraud, balance sheet forgery and market manipulation. Braun was employed by Wirecard for 18 years. After exposing a 1.9 billion euro balance sheet hole, he resigned in June and the company went bankrupt. The Munich public prosecutor’s office accuses Braun and other Wirecard managers of commercial gang fraud, balance sheet forgery and market manipulation. The investigators assume that Wirecard has been making up for years by making systematic air bookings, thereby inflicting billions in losses on investors and banks.
